COLLEGIATE CO€KFI(fIlT!
A cockfight is generally a
contest between two gamecocks
(in otherwords, two violantly
fighting roosters). Usually the
roosters are fitted with metal
spurs to cause excess damage to
the unfortunate. It is also
against the law to have cock
fights and so because it is
illegal, we were seriously con
sidering having one in the
Student Center lounge. How
ever, after much thought, we
decided not to actually have the
cockfight but just to use that
eye-catching headline to get you
reading this article. And since 1
have accomplished my purpose.
I’d like to write on about
different important but unrelat
ed topics.
First, I’d like to tell the
campus about the change that
has occurred in our administr-
ation. Chaplain Dan Hensley,
Jr. has been given a promotion
to become our new Director of
Deferred Giving and Church
Relations. Actually this pro
motion became effective as of
last January l,but he remained
the chaplain until this past
summer when Barbara Allen
was named as his successor.
The Collegiate gives its warmest
congratulations to Chaplain
Hensley(we find it hard not to
call you "chaplain” anymore)
on his promotion and to Chap
lain Allen on her new clergy
position. All our hopes and
prayers are with you both.
Secondly, I'd like to talk about
another important subject in
which I almost didn’t write
about. Brace yourselves, ’cause
here goes. . . . yes folks, Ted
Andersen has returned to At
lantic Christian College! After a
long delay which included in-

I bet very few of you knew
that Christianity was a four-
letter word. Well, it is. Now I
know you’re counting the letters
at this very moment. You’re
thinking that I am "off my
rocker” because there are ob
viously twelve letters in the
word C-H-R-I-S-T-I-A-N-l-T-Y.

ENGLISH?
The Atlantic Christian Col
lege English Club provides op
portunities for the commun
ication of ideas between English
majors, minors, and professors,
and to improve the quality of the
English program through spon
soring such programs as lect
ures, trips, social events on
English-related topics, which
will be open to all club members
and the general college com
munity.
Last year the English Club
provided refreshments at the
fall Stage and Script production
of "Inherit the Wind,” and the
Yeats family visit in the spring,
sponsored the first annual
Shakespeare Week lectures and
dinner and raised money for the
Ted C. Foy (founder of the
English Club) Scholarship
Fund.
This year, the English Club
has a full agenda. On Sept
ember 18th, Craig Falor, ACC
Placement Director, will discuss
job opportunities for senior
English majors. In October, a
panel discussion, dealing with
the same topic, will be held for
the general college community.
The November meeting will
feature Charlie Lohman of the
Wilson Daily Times. The annual
Christmas Party will be held in
December. Club members will
attend a play in Chapel Hill
directed by Professor Candide
Carrassco in February and will
be busy during the month of
March with the Planning of
Ibsen Week activities. The year
will conclude with a picnic in
April.
Wanda Wiggs is English Club
President and Thomas G.
MacLennan is the Faculty Ad
visor. Information about mem
bership in the club is available
at the English Department Of
fice in Hines 217.
Well, you’re right! I don't mean
about me “not having both oars
in the water”(although that may
be true too!) but about the
number of letters in the word
(12). However, being a Christ
ian means trying your best to be
"Christ-like” — which is very
hard, don't kid yourself. In
order to be "Christ-like” you
must be filled with love because
Jesus is filled with love. In fact,
he is love.
So now you can understand
what I was saying about Christ-
ianity being a four-letter word
L-O-V-E are the four letters.
In order to love “properly”,
you should remember the three
steps which lead to true Christ
ian love. First, you should love
yourself. Now, that’s not talking
about narcistic love, being con
ceited, or anything like that. It’s
talking about the self-realization
that you are a child of God and
that He loved you enough to
give you life. So don’t get up in
the morning and scream in
horror when you see what’s in

the mirror. God made you, so
you can’t be all that bad! Be
proud of what you are!
The next step is learning to
love your fellow man. I know a
lot of y’all are wondering how
you can love someone that you
don’t even know and how you
can love your enemies, the very
people that hurt you. You must
love all people. Not just all
people that you know or all
people that treat you right, but
all people period! You might not
know the kid down the block,
but you do know that Gixl
created him to live on this great
planet of ours, so for that reason
alone you should love him . The
neighborhood bums may rough
you up everytime they see you.
but you should still love them
for the very same reason that
you should love your fellow man
— ’cause God created them!
You don’t have to like his
actions(l mean who. besides a
masochist. likes it when some
one comes up and punches him
out?) but you should love him as
a human being, as a soul that is
part of God’s creation.
So. that brings us down to the
third and ultimate step. That’s
loving God. Unless you love
yourself and your fellow man,
you can't love God. You can’t
love the creator without loving
the created.
True Christian love requires
all three steps. Our Lord has
given us this great opportunity

decision on whether to come
back or not. he made his
dramatic entry on August 28.
1980.
The CollegUte new spaper staff
had been in utter turmoil for
days not knowing whether their
co-business manager was going
to return. Ted made a number of
urgent long distance phone calls
from his home in Grcenporl,
N.Y. directed to the Collegiate
Editor. However he(which is
me) never received any of them.
This added to the doubt as to
whether "Ready Teddy” was
going to return to Wilson.
The entire campus(at least
those who knew and loved him)
constantly wondered if he was
coming back. . . . that is, until
the grand day arrived!
And he’s back, yes folks, he’s
back! You'll see Ted Andersen
catting everything in sight in
the cafeteria and roaming across
the campus doing all those crazy
and insane things that we
usually associate with him(you
know, the things that all Colleg
iate staff members do after
being in the Swamp for a while).
Ted is just as looney as the rest
of us and we’re all sure glad
he’s back. A.C. just wouldn't be
the same without him!
Next, it would be very appro
priate to mention that we have
“Royalty in Our Midst.” How
ever. since we have a separate
article in this issue with that
same title. I won’t pursue it
further here.
Also, the American Red Cross
Blotxlmobile will visit at Wilson
Memorial Hospital on Sept. 3rd
through 5th. Blood is urgently
needed this time of the year. So
come out. Help them reach their
goal of 450 pints, and maybe
save someones life.
Lastly, I’d Like to mention the
1980 Fall Convocation which
was held this past week in
center campus. There was one
slight problem this gathering. . .
very few students attended it
(and it sure won’t because of

Freshmen, you’ve now all
experienced one week of college
life. How do you like it? It’s
great, isn’t it? It’s a completely
different scene than any you've
ever experienced before I’m
sure.
1 know how you feel — a little
bit apprehensive, a little bit
scared, and a little bit of a lot of
things. Don’t worry, that’s the it
always is!
I remember when I was a
freshman. I had that apprehen
sive feeling myself. The best
thing to do is to really get
involved in the campus activities
and stuff. Try to go out and
meet new people and pretty
soon guess what? You'll feel

more and more a part of Atlantic
Christian College. So don't fret,
everything is going to be cool!
A great opportunity to meet
new people and to enjoy good
Christian fellowship will be to
come to Alpha Omega. It is held
at 7:00 every Thursday evening
in the Still Point. If you don't
know where the Still Point is.
then I'll tell you. It's this wild
little round building which is
located on the brick walk side of
the Chapel. It has a little sign
by the door that says, “The Still
Point." You can’t miss it! Just
drop by there on Thursday and
see what's happening. It's a real
“right on” and super group of
people. Hope to see you there!
